WATTS VILLAGE THEATER COMPANY HOSTS EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS
Minority youth deliver acclaimed cutting edge productions through WVTC workshops

Los Angeles, CA - April 8, 2011 – Watts Village Theater Company (WVTC) will celebrate 15 years of serving youth in the Watts and South LA area by hosting the WVTC Coming of Age Fundraiser to be held on Monday, May 16, 2011 at the California African American Museum beginning at 6:30 pm. This inspiring event will raise funds for at-risk youth in the Watts Community to provide positive alternatives through the Quentin Drew Memorial (QDM) Internship Program and education in the performing arts. “We are proud to serve our community with entertaining, relevant and educational theater, and remain committed to continuously producing cutting-edge, timely work by artists of color that speaks to our community,” mused WVTC’s Artistic Director Guillermo Avilés-Rodríguez. The evening will include live music, entertainment, guided tours of CAAM exhibits, and the honoring of Clifton Johnson and Rosie Lee Hooks, our “Community Towers,” who are pillars in our community like WVTC, making a substantial difference in South LA and around the world.

Did you know the Watts community has one of the highest concentration of gangs within Los Angeles County? With over 30,000 residents, the Watts area is a predominantly Latino and African-American community of low-income and working-class families with a large concentration of youth under the age of 18. The fear that gangs and violence generate in this community is overwhelming to the families and youth who must not only navigate gang territories, but also deal with the harsh realities of poverty.

Since 1996, WVTC has been a leader in providing acting and theatrical performance workshops for at-risk youth in Watts and South Los Angeles. In a community constantly struggling with poverty and adversity, WVTC infuses our culturally diverse community with a tolerance for differences through the development and production of thought-provoking works such as "Meet Me @Metro," a site-specific extravaganza performed on and around the Los Angeles Metro transit system.

With your support, by attending this event you can continue to empower youth in the Watts community to express their voice through the arts and bring the community together. For further information contact Naheemah McMicheaux at Naheemah@wattsvillagetheatercompany.com or go to
